CMS 1st Annual Olympics

                                 CMS 1st Annual Olympics

Several Colby Middle School classes celebrated Ancient Greece by holding the first annual Olympics.  Mrs. Giersch’s social studies classes studied Ancient Greece and worked with Mr. Cox’s and Mrs. Wagoner’s physical education classes to run the Olympic events.

Students participated in hurdles, shot put, long jump, luge, swimming, javelin, discus throw and balance beam.  Of course, we made certain modifications due to the fact that USD 315 does not have a pool, luge, balance beam, etc.  Students used scooters to “swim” a timed distance.  In the luge, students laid on their backs to reach a distance as quickly as possible.  Other modifications included: paper plates for the discus throw, straws for the javelin, whiffle ball for the shot put.  USD 315 did have some small hurdles and a balance beam that were used.

All in all, students had a great time combining social studies and physical education to get a taste of Olympic events.
